The Melbourne Cup is a prestigious horse race held annually in Australia. It is one of the richest horse race in the world. The race is 3,200-metre for 3-year-olds and above. It is conducted by Victoria Racing Club on first Tuesday in November.
The first one was held in 1861. Initially it was 2 miles but was shortened in 1972 to 3.2 kilometers after adoption of metric system. Kingston Rule is current record holder having won with 3:16:3 in 1990 race.
It is a quality handicap race where minimum weight is 50kg and there is no maximum weight. The weight of riding gear and Jockey is adjusted using ballast to a nominated figure. Younger horses carry less weight than older ones. Weights were determined in such a way that each participant had equal chances of winning. This changed to “quality handicap” formula – superior horses get less weight than before. VRC handicapper determines weight.
Entries close in first week of August and initial entry fee is $600. 300-400 horses are nominated annually though there are only 24 starters. Once you have been picked, you must declare acceptance on 4 occasions. First acceptance is $960, second one is $1,450, third one is $2,420, and final acceptance is $45,375. If you are balloted out in final field, final fee is refunded. Directors have absolute rights to exclude anyone from racing on their discretion.

This race is full of very interesting history. Idea of holding it and coming up with its name “Melbourne Cup” is credited to Frederick Standish who was a member of Victorian Turf Club. Initial race happened on 7 November 1861 before a crowd of 4,000 people and prize was a hand beaten gold-watch and 710 gold sovereigns – £710.
First winner was a stallion called archer (time of 3:52.00) ridden by John Cutts and trained by Etienne de Mestre. It is very clear from history that this was eventful affair. One horse went out even before the start. 3 starters fell during racing and 2 died. Archer was an outsider, but he took lot money fuelling interstate rivalry which greatly added excitement to Melbourne Cup.
1876 Cup was won by a 3-year-old filly named Briseis who was trained and owned by James Wilson Snr. Briseis won VRC Derby, VRC Oaks and Melbourne Cup within 6 days, creating a record that has never been broken. It was ridden by a 12-year-old jockey, Peter St. Albans. He is the youngest person to win the Melbourne Cup ever. One writer stated that Briseis was ridden by a “mere child”.
The competition has gone through many alterations in recent past. There has been entry of many horses that are foreign-trained. Although many of them fail to cope with conditions, there are still successful raids including two horses trained by Dermot K. Weld (Irish) in 1993 and 2002 and one in 2006 by Japanese trainer, Katsumi Yoshida–renowned breeding family.
